It's important to distinguish between a new update, and a new version.
A new update has the same main version number. So, for example, a change from 22.0.1.2 to 22.1.4.5 is an update.
A new version has a different version number at the front. So the change from 21.9 to 22.0 is a new version.
You can install a new update at any time.
We recommend that you only install a new version when we advise you to. Our recommendation is also that you set your settings to alert you to new updates, but not to new versions.
In Windows this is under Edit > Settings (or Edit > Preferences).
In Mac it's under FileMaker Pro > Settings.
Install an Update
When you receive an alert about a new update available, check that it's the same main version number that you currently have installed. If you have a recent version of Music Monitor, you can check that in the information icon on the Home screen.
If you don't have that icon yet, on Windows go to Help > About FileMaker Pro, or on Mac go to FileMaker Pro > About FileMaker Pro. The version number will be on that screen.
If it is the same main version, and so just an update, simply run the installer at any convenient time and FileMaker will update your software.
Install a New Version
A new main version number signifies a major new build in the software, so it's generally necessary in that case to uninstall your old version and install a completely new copy of the software.
It's also important to ensure that the version your computer has installed is compatible with the version your server has installed. FileMaker versions are compatible to a difference of one main version in either direction. In the screenshot above, you can see that my computer is running a version 22 installation, and the server has a version 21 installation. Those are compatible. A version older than 21 would not be compatible with the new software.
For both these reasons, our recommendation is that you only install updates, and not new versions, until we advise you (and, if you host your own file, your in-house IT people) to update the server and the end users in a coordinated way. If your server is hosted with us, we'll update the server software so you only need to update your own device when advised.
Steps to install the new version:
Uninstall your current copy of FileMaker Pro.
In Windows, search "uninstall" in the Windows menu to find the correct tool to use, then select the FileMaker software to uninstall.
On Mac, drag the application to the bin.
Follow the downloads link we will send you when you need to install a new version.
Download and save the Licence Certificate. You don't need to open this file.
Download the latest version of FileMaker Pro for your system and run the installer.
During the installation, you will need to navigate to where you saved the Licence Certificate.
Once the installation is complete, follow the instructions at Connect to Music Monitor to add your file as a favourite again.
Troubleshooting
Can't create msi
Some Windows users encounter this error in installing the new version. It appears that the old version doesn't completely uninstall. If you get this error, cancel the installer and go to C:/Program Files and look for any folder called "FileMaker Pro". If you find one, delete it and then run the downloaded installer again.
If that isn't the issue (there was no folder or deleting it didn't result in successful install), check with your in-house IT or with us for further advice.
Connection failed
If you get this error when trying to add Music Monitor as a favourite, your computer is failing to connect to the server your file is located on. If your Internet connection is working at the moment:
Check that the host's internet address is entered correctly.
Try HTTPS Tunneling
Commonly nowadays, your setup will use HTTPS Tunneling to connect you to your server via the same port that the general Internet uses, which saves you from having to open a more sensitive port to outside traffic. To use this you must enable it in your FileMaker installation.
If that doesn't solve the issue, check with us for further advice. If you host your own file in-house, also check with your IT department that the server is running.
